With my background in photojournalism, I still do some work for area magazines, and every once in a while, I get an opportunity that’s more than just a photography session—it becomes an honor. That’s exactly how I felt when I had the privilege of photographing Dr. Robert L. Green for the cover of Ashburn Magazine, where I also had the pleasure of meeting his wife and two of his sons. Dr. Green is not just an accomplished educator and civil rights advocate, but also a close colleague and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I can’t even begin to describe what it meant to be in the presence of someone who has contributed so profoundly to the civil rights movement.
The Story of Dr. Robert L. Green’s Life
Dr. Green’s life has been dedicated to making a difference, breaking barriers, and lifting others up. He served as an advisor to Dr. King, working with him during the peak of the civil rights movement. His dedication didn’t end there—Dr. Robert L. Green went on to become the first African American to serve as a dean at Michigan State University and has been a relentless advocate for equal rights in education, striving to make sure all children, regardless of background, have access to quality schooling. His career has been filled with accomplishments that have inspired countless individuals, and being able to capture him in this small moment was truly humbling.
What made this session even more special was discovering that we’re neighbors—both of us call Ashburn, Virginia home. It’s not every day that you find out a figure of historical importance lives just around the corner. Meeting Dr. Green and his family was an experience I’ll always treasure, not only because of who he is but because of the warmth and kindness they all radiated. It was a glimpse into the personal side of a man who has lived through, and contributed to, some of the most pivotal moments in American history.
It’s moments like these that remind me why I do what I do. Photography allows me to not only capture memories but also celebrate the lives of those who have made an impact on the world. This session with Dr. Green and his family was more than just capturing portraits—it was about documenting the spirit of a legacy, one that continues to shape and inspire us all.
