I had the opportunity to visit Haiti several times in the years following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 2010. That one event devastated the country, killing around 300,000 and displacing 1.5 million people. This considerably expanded the number of orphans in the country, adding over 20,000 children to be cared for by relatives or taken in by orphanages. The nonprofit I travelled with (since disbanded) focused on whole health for the children, with a focus on medical & mental health and ensuring that their food pantries were full. It was an honor, a privilege, and life-changing to work alongside the doctors, social workers, and other supporters. We were illuminated to the cruel and unjust doings of corrupt orphanages and other atrocities, but what outweighed the difficult truths was the beauty and love of so many of the people all working toward the same goal: ensuring that the children's basic needs were met with the most genuine effort to care for and teach them with love.
On our epic family trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar, a lifelong dream for me, we were blown away by the huge elephant herd we saw the first day of our safari. We spotted everything from giraffes, with their other-worldly graceful run, to hippos, zebras, lions....too many to mention! We got to know the Maasai in one of their villages, diving into their amazing traditions and culture--seriously unforgettable. Zanzibar's spice plantation tour was a huge hit, full of exotic fragrances, fascinating facts, and handmade flower jewelry woven there as we toured. We wrapped it all up on stunning beaches and learning the history of Zanzibar; the sunsets made us feel like we were sitting in a postcard. This trip was the perfect mix of learning and bonding, making memories we'll laugh about forever (ask about us getting stranded - twice in one day! - in the Serengeti). Just a bucket-list, priceless experience that we were so blessed to experience together.
Join us on a journey through Sicily! A wonderful getaway where the ocean's vastness met our soul's need for adventure. The cooking lessons we took, that revealed the secrets of homemade pasta, also filled the air with the comforting aromas of fresh ingredients and time-honored recipes. The ocean in all its magnitude offered us a thoroughly refreshing experience with expansive views after long hairpin turns up mountains. We immersed ourselves in the vibrant Sicilian culture, where every corner presents a new sensory feast, from the melodic chatter of locals to the tactile pleasure of ancient cobblestones underfoot. We allowed the gentle ocean breeze to invigorate our spirits and the warm hospitality of Sicily made us feel right at home.
